Alumni Files: West Babylon Softball Player Makes College History

Hofstra junior becomes first softball player to be named National Division I Player of the Week.

St. John the Baptist alumna Olivia Galati earned the Colonial Athletic Association's Pitcher and co-Player of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday. According to the Hofstra Athletic Department, Galati became the first Hofstra player to earn the prestigious award after hitting .429 while compiling a 0.58 ERA with four wins and a save in the circle.

Galati told Hofstra Athletic Communications that "it's such a honor to even be considered. Any award you win is great, but to be recognized at the national level is something very special to me."

Hofstra's Brian Bohl said the West Babylon native is being increasingly recognized as one of the leading Division 1 softball players in the country. She has won her last 16 starts and is 18-5 overall. As both a freshman and sophmore Galati won the Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year award.

With one more year to go, Galati is on pace to make even more Hofstra history. She currently ranks second in career strikeouts (642) and is sixth in wins (55), and hopes to become the first pitcher to hit 1000 strikeouts and 100 wins.

The 21-year-old plans to major in education and would like to be a physical education teacher. She began playing softball at age 11, and now, with one more year of college to go, is poised to shatter even more sports records.
