Mayor: Curfew for Area South of Montauk Highway

Areas in flood zone are considered much more dangerous and potentially life-threatening.

Update (11/2 at 3:50 p.m.): Village officials have clarified the curfew is for non-residents of the zone noted. All residents will need to present an identification proving their residency in the curfew zone.

Original Story: Mayor Ralph Scordino has issued an executive order declaring a curfew to all areas in Babylon Village south of Montauk Highway/Main Street from dusk to dawn. The order is effective immediately.

The executive order, the first signed by Scordino since a Local State of Emergency, was signed this morning at 11:30 a.m. and prohibits all persons and vehicles from entering the large swath of the village in the Mandatory and Voluntary Evacuation Zones, which were south of Route 27A.

The southern areas were hit the hardest by Hurricane Sandy with flood waters coming up nearly nine feet at points and destroying much of the interiors, if not exteriors, of the village's homes in that area. Downed trees and power lines, while mostly cleared, are still an issue. With more people returning home to save their possession and assess damage and little-to-no power available, the order aims to protect the lives of residents in those areas and others.

Breaking curfew is now a punishable criminal offense south of Montauk Highway, in compliance with New York State executive laws.

The curfew is in effect until repealed by the village.
