5 Things to Know: October 25th

Gloomy weather stays overhead throughout your Thursday.

1. Patch Forecast – Drizzle will be off-and-on throughout Thursday in Babylon Village as a frontal boundary stalls out above the Island. Expect drizzle to be light, but, as it usually is, annoying. Highs in the area will be right around 62°.

We will continute to monitor the development and track of Hurricane Sandy in the south and update you as the storm potentially approaches our area.

2. Congregation Beth Sholom will be hosting a Senior Social Time starting at 12:30 p.m. Open to the public, local residents are invited for an afternoon of cards, conversation, coffee and company.

3. Get the kids in shape with some Kids Yoga at 5 p.m. Introduce youngsters to yoga through using the power of imagination. They will learn how to strengthen and stretch their physical bodies with a playful mind. The event costs $12.00.

4. West Babylon Public Library will host a fun evening of gaming with its Wii Party starting at 6:30 p.m. Join others as they compete against each other with 13 different party games.

5. Nassau County Police Officer Arthur "Artie" Lopez will be waked at Merrick Fire Department today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. If you are planning on attending, please expect a large crowd and traffic delays.

As I explained, my post was made on behalf of another village resident. However, I did take theRead More time to read the statute and do have an independent viewpoint on this subject. While I do not feel that all dogs require a muzzle at all times, if you have a dog that you know to be a threat to other dogs or humans, you would have a duty to take measures to eliminate that threat before bring that dog into public. If that measure is a muzzle, then that's what must be done. As my post indicated, I believe strict enforcement would be exceedingly difficult and, perhaps, unnecessary (at least with respect to the muzzle requirement). However, a total lack of enforcement is dangerous and unacceptable. I think a little common sense goes a long way and I have confidence that those charged with enforcing the Village code could do so selectively. I understand that selective enforcement may be a concept that many feel uncomfortable with. However, just because the law requires a muzzle, that is hardly a reason to disregard it in its entirety and allow dogs with vicious propensities to roam around unleashed. I will leave it up to Village lawmakers to remove the muzzle requirement (and suggest that they do so) if that is what it would take to make people comfortable with the leash requirement.
