5 Things to Know: September 25th

Cool weather continues to keep the area below Fall averages throughout your Tuesday.

* Yesterday we listed a Babylon Village Board meeting on the day's events. Due to some confusion, we mixed up the days for the event. We apologize for any inconvinences.

1. Patch Forecast – The crispy air continues throughout most of your Tuesday. Blue skies and some puffy clouds throughout the day, but not a hint of rain. Babylon Village will see a high temperature of only 72°, perfect for a t-shirt!

2. Drop in the Babylon Public Library at 3:45 p.m. with the kids for Drop-In Crafts! Take home a fun project for free!

3. The Friends of the West Babylon Public Library will meet at 4 p.m. at West Babylon Public Library. Join them outside in the Garden, weather permitting.

4. The Babylon Parent-Teachers Association for Grades K through 6 will meet at 7 p.m. at Babylon Memorial Grade School. All are welcome to attend.

5. The Babylon Village Board of Trustees will hold a Public Hearing followed by a Public Meeting starting at 7 p.m. This will include the board hearing complaints from the group fighting to keep the home at 527 Deer Park Avenue from demolition. The hearing is at 7 p.m. and public meeting starts at 8 p.m.

As I explained, my post was made on behalf of another village resident. However, I did take theRead More time to read the statute and do have an independent viewpoint on this subject. While I do not feel that all dogs require a muzzle at all times, if you have a dog that you know to be a threat to other dogs or humans, you would have a duty to take measures to eliminate that threat before bring that dog into public. If that measure is a muzzle, then that's what must be done. As my post indicated, I believe strict enforcement would be exceedingly difficult and, perhaps, unnecessary (at least with respect to the muzzle requirement). However, a total lack of enforcement is dangerous and unacceptable. I think a little common sense goes a long way and I have confidence that those charged with enforcing the Village code could do so selectively. I understand that selective enforcement may be a concept that many feel uncomfortable with. However, just because the law requires a muzzle, that is hardly a reason to disregard it in its entirety and allow dogs with vicious propensities to roam around unleashed. I will leave it up to Village lawmakers to remove the muzzle requirement (and suggest that they do so) if that is what it would take to make people comfortable with the leash requirement.
