Women's Club Aims To Expand Outreach

The club is getting ready for its annual auction slated for next month.

The Babylon Village Women's Club is busy gearing up for its biggest event of the year and members hope to do more than ever to help the needy.

The annual holiday auction held by the BVWC will be held Wednesday, December 1, at 6:30 p.m. at the Venetian Yacht club and all proceeds will benefit local soup kitchens.

The BVWC is a non-profit organization with 115 resident members and founded in 1992 with the aim to help the village and its citizens and create a forum to provide charitable, informational  and civic activities.

President Roula Sanders says the group is passionate about its community and commits a great deal of time to the club's charitable endeavors.

The BVWC is well-known for its annual scholarship which is awarded to women continuing their educational goals.  The award is typically between $1,500 and $3,000 and a scholarship committee chooses the recipient through an involved selection process that includes interviews.

Sanders says going forward the group wants to increase opportunities to involve children and families in the community outreach.

They've already taken the first step and this year, for the first time, created 120 "birthday packages" to donate to a Babylon area food pantry.

The kits consisted of candles, cake mix, icing and all the necessities families would need to celebrate a child's birthday.

The club also fundraises for other community organizations such as the FISH club and the Pilot Club, as well as for local girls sports teams.  The group conducts a food drive at a local supermarket and has donated goods to four local soup kitchens. Every October, the Post Office Cafe hosts an annual 5K Run and 1K Fun Run, which the BVWC sponsors.

Members also hold social events during the year,  such as a monthly gathering in a member's home, as well as Halloween and Spring Fling family parties.  A "Secret Neighbor" program helps members meet others in the Village through anonymous gift giving.

Sanders said the club also hopes to sponsor park and  public area clean-ups and other events that empower women and their children to make a difference in their community.
