Blizzard Not Keeping Diehard Gridiron Fans at Home

Hazardous road conditions and wicked snowy weather isn't stopping football fans from enjoying the afternoon at local village establishments.

The blizzard isn't keeping everyone home in Babylon Village today.

Diehard Jets fans make for a full bar crowd at one popular pub, and a decent crowd at another at the other end of town. But some businesses are closing early and calls to town and village departments regarding snow removal efforts have gone unanswered.

At the Post Office Cafe, it's business as usual, or even better than some past Sundays.

"We have a normal crowd, a full bar and even a very decent restaurant crowd," said a manager, and there was no plans to close earlier than the usual 11 p.m. as of mid afternoon.

Yet the Babylon Bean Coffee Extreme was closing early despite brisk business earlier in the day.

"We were busy, doing fine and then it just started to get quiet around 1 p.m.," said owner Sal Gervasi. "This weather has the snow coming down sideways and there isn't a soul on the street," he said, noting he was closing at 3 p.m. instead of the usual 6 p.m. time.

There may not be lots of people walking village streets, but there is a decent crowd at Mary Carrolls, with football fans enjoying the afternoon at the Irish pub.

"Business hasn't been bad. Not jammed but the regulars are here," said bartender Chris Felice.

Lifelong village resident Wally Levins, owner of Coastal Island Treasures, says roads are getting bad fast. "Everyone is slipping and sliding...Just went out to get gas for the snowblower, staying put now."

Call to Babylon Town's public works department and a call to the public safety department number went unanswered. Patch could not reach any village officials to get insight on roadway and plowing conditions.
