Get Out of the Cold and Warm Up With a Good Book

It’s cold outside and there’s nothing like cuddling up with a good book to take your mind off the ice and snow still piled high from the recent storm.

So take some time and visit the Babylon Public Library this week as this month reveals the winners of four book awards and you can be the first to grab them off the shelves.

This year’s 2011Newbery Medal winner (awarded for the most outstanding contribution to Children’s Literature) is: Moon over Manifest, by Clare Vanderpool.

This year’s 2011 Caldecott Medal for most distinguished American picture book for children is: A Sick Day for Amos McGee illustrated by Erin E. Stead and written by Philip C. Stead.

This year’s 2011 Coretta Scott King Book Award recognizing an African American illustrator of outstanding books for children and young adults is: Dave the Potter, Artist, Poet, Slave.  Illustrated by Bryan Collier.

And the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, which honors an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States have made, over a period of years, a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children is: Tomie DePaola, author and illustrator of such great books as 26 Fairmont Avenue and the Strega Nona series.

If none of those pique your interest, then get a jump on celebrating Black History Month, which happens in February.

The library is also a great place to boost your knowledge about Martin Luther King Jr., and his contributions to the civil rights movement.
