Remembering Irene One Year Later

Tuesday marks the anniversary of the day the tropical storm touched Long Island.

It was one year ago today that hardware stores were running out of batteries, windows were taped and trees were falling to the ground as Tropical Storm Irene swept Long Island.

Irene was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm by the time it hit the South Shore, but its gusts still did major damage to the area. LIPA recorded over 500,000 outages at one point following the storm and estimates of total damage throughout the state were estimated near $300 million.
