After serving the local community for over 23 years, West Babylon Public Library Director Anne Marie Dolan will retired this January, she announced in the library's recent newsletter.
"The thought of leaving brings mixed emotions, as working here has been a dream come true," Dolan said. "I am grateful to have helped guide the Library from a small store front, stocked with cast off books and furniture to our wonderful, expanded building which is filled with new materials, technology and innovative programs and services."
Under her guidance, the West Babylon Public Library has become the beautiful and well-stocked center visible today. Renovations to the current building brought it up to speed with both space and technologies, including public WiFi.
Dolan began her career working in libraries over 40 years ago, working at different positions including Page, Clerk, Librarian Trainee and, eventually, Librarian.
Dolan praised the library's past staff for helping the present iteration become a well-used community tool.
"The Library staff are unsung heroes who labored during the early years with broken equipment and supplies they brought from home," Dolan noted. "In addition, they dealt with special circumstances such as having to regularly find enough buckets to place under the old roof leaks, cleaning up after the frequent back-ups in the old plumbing and playing catch up to surrounding libraries, which had been in existence for dozens of years longer and had triple the budget and staff. They dealt with adversity on a daily basis and made our Library one of the finest around."
She added: "Current staff continue to shine and have developed one of the most up-to-date collections and provide unique and cutting edge services and programs."
Dolan also thanked the residents of West Babylon and other communities that have used the library's services for their help and support over the years.
"Year after year, your patronage, encouragement and kind words have meant the world to me and have ensured the success of the Library," she said. "As you can see, I have been lucky to work at this wonderful Library and will truly miss it. Thank you for this opportunity of a lifetime."
