Weekend Planner: LI Championship, Holiday Events

A fun weekend of holiday-related events and a football game for all the marbles are on tap.

All Weekend

Patch Forecast – A nice weekend is on its way for us in Babylon Village. Highs will increase throughout the weekend with Friday's being 46° and jumping to 54° by Sunday. Nightly lows will remain in the lower 40's, so keep a nice coat around and maybe a scarf. The National Weather Service is also calling for a very slight chance for rain Friday night into Saturday, so keep an eye out and an umbrella handy.

Long Island Home Recreation has been designated a Toys for Tots drop-off location. Owner Patty Vorilas said she will give 20% any in-store item for every person who brings in a new, unwrapped toy for the donation drive.

Friday

The Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce will host their annual Old Fashioned Night of Shopping all over the business district of the village starting at 5 p.m. Carolers will be throughout the beautifully decorated village, businesses will be open with discounts and Santa Claus will be dropping by to take photos and listen to children's requests for toys.

Christmas at the Conklin House will also take place during the event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitors can tour the Nathaniel Conklin House, which is already decorated for the holiday season. Light refreshments, including cookies from Thursday's cookie contest, will be served.

Saturday

Get ready for a double-header of epic sports battles for the Babylon Panthers...

First, the Varsity Football Team will take their perfect record and Suffolk County Championship back to Stony Brook University at take on the Roosevelt Rough Riders for the Division IV Long Island Championship at 4:30 p.m.

As soon as the game's over, head over to Stony Brook for a Varsity Basketball matchup at 7 p.m.

Need some live music in your life? Come enjoy some great music at All the Perks Espresso Cafe in West Babylon as they host Weevos, an acoustic folk duo, at 3:00 p.m. or... join The Babylon Bean every Saturday night from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. for live performances by magnificent & renowned local musicians. Enjoy great coffee and amazing tunes!

The West Babylon Fire Department and West Babylon Lions Club will host the Second Annual Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting at 5 p.m. The parade will beging at Little East Neck Road and proceed to the intersection with 11th street. Senator Owen Johnson will light this year's tree. Santa will be on hand to give away small gifts, take photos and free hot chocolate will be served.

Sunday

More Toys for Tots action – the American Legion Post 94 will host their annual Toys for Tots Dance and Fundraiser. Join them for delicious food, a DJ, dancing, dessert, 50/50s and raffles. The event kicks off at 3 p.m. and costs $10.00

The Village of Babylon will host its annual Christmas Tree Lighting at 4 p.m.

As I explained, my post was made on behalf of another village resident. However, I did take theRead More time to read the statute and do have an independent viewpoint on this subject. While I do not feel that all dogs require a muzzle at all times, if you have a dog that you know to be a threat to other dogs or humans, you would have a duty to take measures to eliminate that threat before bring that dog into public. If that measure is a muzzle, then that's what must be done. As my post indicated, I believe strict enforcement would be exceedingly difficult and, perhaps, unnecessary (at least with respect to the muzzle requirement). However, a total lack of enforcement is dangerous and unacceptable. I think a little common sense goes a long way and I have confidence that those charged with enforcing the Village code could do so selectively. I understand that selective enforcement may be a concept that many feel uncomfortable with. However, just because the law requires a muzzle, that is hardly a reason to disregard it in its entirety and allow dogs with vicious propensities to roam around unleashed. I will leave it up to Village lawmakers to remove the muzzle requirement (and suggest that they do so) if that is what it would take to make people comfortable with the leash requirement.
