News Tidbits, Upcoming Events & Interesting Data on the Business District

Every week Patch offers up insight on the who, what and where of things in and around the business district.

The impending arrival of spring is marked by a slew of great upcoming events and we even got a few interesting news tidbits to share this week.


First off, congrats to Mayor Ralph Scordino and his wife on the healthy arrival of twin granddaughters, Ava and Olivia. I'm guessing the girls will be late walkers given all the grandparent holding they're bound to get.

It looks like there’ll be some building plans regarding the now-empty Hook restaurant as a group of three investors is considering establishing a new restaurant. Village officials say they will be more stringent on covenants regarding outdoor dining and have indicated they don’t want a bar establishment.

There’s a new Conklin House fundraiser in the works that sounds like fun for anyone who loves wine or cheese or the two together. Solo Vino and the new Babylon Cheese Cellar are helping out on a ‘pairing’ event where attendees will learn what white and red to serve with cheese and other food items.

Grievance Day was pretty quiet, say village officials, as just five homeowners pleaded their case to have their village taxes lowered.

The village board granted conditional approval to the revamped Molto Vino business plan.

The Last Hope Animal Rescue is holding a jewelry sale on Saturday, March 3 from 11am to 2pm at the Last Hope Wantagh Adoption Center located at 3300 Beltagh Avenue (across from Wantagh High School). All proceeds benefit Last Hope's special needs dogs and cats. To donate items or for more information call 516-921-2008.

Did you know there are approximately 75 restaurants, bars, eateries, candy and ice cream parlors and delicatessens/food sales stores in the village and that approximately 70 businesses have their primary function as retail sales? There are also about 140 service businesses, which include insurance and travel agents, banks, financial service, salons, dance studios and all other service based businesses. The village is also chockfull of medical professionals, with about 25 doctors, which include eye doctors, dentists and chiropractors. Those figures comes from the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce which puts out a newsletter to help keep business updated about village news and events. The American Legion Auxiliary is hosting its third annual Easter breakfast with the Easter Bunny at the American legion Post# 94, at 22 Grove Place, on March 10 from 8am to 12pm. The cost is $5 For adults, children 12 and under are free. The admissio covers coffee, tea, juice, eggs, pancakes and bacon. For more info  call 631-669-009.

It’s nearly time for the fourth annual Babylon Village Pub Crawl. This year the March 24th event honors the memory of Janet Fabian and all those lost to cancer. A 100 percent of the money raised goes to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and other charitable organizations. The event features stops at six to seven local bars, live music, free food and drink specials. Check out the website for registration information.

Monsoon is now open for lunch and is running a 50% off special starting March 7th and running through March 16. That's half price on all lunch items as well as the $17.50 price-fix lunch option. Lunch hours are 11:30 a.m to 3 p.m., closed Tuesdays.
