W. Babylon Man Dead After Lindenhurst Bike Crash

A West Babylon man is dead after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle through Lindenhurst Tuesday evening.

Suffolk County Police said the 61-year old bicyclist, a West Babylon resident, was riding southbound along Wellwood Avenue when he attempted to cross Berry Street. He collided with a 2006 Volkswagen also traveling southbound on Wellwood Avenue at around 9:25 p.m.

The bicyclist was rushed to Good Samartian Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where he was pronounced dead.

Suffolk County Police have not released the bicyclist’s name as of 8:30 a.m. as they await notification of his family members.

The Volkswagen driver, Michael Edwards, 36, of Wheatley Heights, stayed at the scene following the collision. He was not injured during the crash and charges were not filed.

Edwards’ vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

The investigation is ongoing and detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
