Main Street Stroll Reveals Business News, Golf Tips and a Bit of Gossip

The beauty of Babylon's walking village is that even when it seems quiet there's a lot happening behind the doors.

Schools, post offices, the stock markets, banks and libraries are all closed Monday. And despite a bit of chill, it’s a fine day to walk the village.

Saunter over to Argyle Park and admire the restoration work done on the second waterfall and retaining wall. There’s not a ripple as the water moves down the arc steps and toward the bay. Later today Patch will have exclusive photos of the repair work by village maintenance crews and Patch thanks Skip Gardner and his guys for sharing the great photos.

You might be surprised to know that Argyle Park is home to more than a few fish and some can be spotted even in the dead of winter. But don't go baiting any hooks. That's a no-no.

From there head east on the north side of Main Street to browse storefronts, including Unique Golf.

Owner Jim Wichert says it's prime time for a head start on getting clubs in shape. The shop is offering free iron club fittings during January and February.

Don’t wait for the traditional golfer’s New Years, which is March 15, says Wichert. “This is a great time to bring in old equipment, get new grips,” he told Patch.

As he says, golfing is as much about skill as it is about equipment maintenance. I'm taking his word for it given I've only hit balls at the range with a hand-me down men's club set. From the little bit I picked up talking with the golf ace, I'm pretty sure my clubs are too short and that's why I can't seem to hit the ball.

Across the street, Body & Brain Holistic Yoga, near the old deli (whose storefront now boasts a sign stating there is a new deli coming), officially opened this weekend and was offering a free class to interested customers.

Check out Patch later this week, as we’ll be doing a profile on the new business that arrived Saturday complete with balloons and a bongo drum player.

Just down Main a bit west, Unique Gifts is having a 50 percent off sale on holiday and Christmas merchandise so it might be a great time to add to that mantel collection or get a super jump on next year’s gift list.

Over on Deer Park Avenue, the Lo-Man Outdoor Store is having plenty of sales also, and there are some gorgeous women’s wallets at 66 percent off. They're from the Kenneth Cole collection, which was selling for $60 just a few weeks ago, and are now a $19.99 bargain.

Stop in and sign up for a great upcoming beer dinner event at Horace & Sylvia's Publick House. Tickets for Southern Tier Beer Dinner, which will be held on January 25, are on sale now.

If you’re parched and famished after your village stroll and want to try something new, stop in and say hi to the new owners of the Tidewater Grill & Tavern.

They’ve done a spectacular job at making the corner establishment bright, nautical and welcoming. They’re big on supporting local businesses. If you recognize the open/closed nautical lifesaver sign on the door it’s because it came from right down the block at Coastal Treasures. Local artists created the restaurant’s decorative signs noting restroom areas.

And, just to give you a heads up on the sly, a village business will soon be starring in a very unique reality TV show. One hint: There is no Kardashian involved.

Patch is sworn to secrecy until it happens next month, but we know you’ll get a huge kick out of it and promise there’s nothing fishy going on. Got any guesses on who and what? Share in the comments below.
