Taxi Service Offers Free Rides to Tipsy Drivers

Suffolk County and Lindy's Taxi are teaming up to help ensure that the holidays are a safe time for those who find themselves too inebriated to drive home from a holiday party or a night out with friends by providing a free ride home any time from now  through New Year's Day.

The effort is part of the county's DWI program and the taxi service said they'll even provide a second ride to retrieve a customer's car left at the bar or holiday party site.

"I'd like to commend Lindy's Taxi service for helping save lives," said Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, in a statement about the service.  "There is absolutely no reason to ever drink and drive, and now with Lindy's generous offer, there is no excuse."

Suffolk police are urging residents to drink responsibly and not drive if drinking.

"I urge anyone who plans on drinking alcohol to do so responsibly," said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer.  "This is a great service to the community."

The taxi service, based in Islandia, says the program will be worth the effort if it helps prevent an accident or tragedy.

"We are pleased to work with the county executive and the police department to help keep drunken drivers off Suffolk's roads this holiday season," Lindy's Taxi owner John Tomitz said. "If we can avoid one crash or tragic death, our efforts will be well worth it."
