It's Columbus Day and schools and government offices are closed which means an opportunity for fun or to catch up on tasks.

It's Monday, October 10th and while schools, libraries and government offices are closed, there are still plenty of options for keeping the kids busy and fun for those lucky enough not to be working.

Patch offers up a list of five potential things to do if you're not focused on sleeping in.

1. Get a jump on the leaf avalanche coming soon by raking up yards, cleaning gutters and sprucing up the landscape. It's suppose to be a great weather day for any outdoor activity.

2. Catch a movie in the afternoon and splurge on the extra box of candy, especially if you burned a few hundred calories raking earlier in the day.

3. Walk the village and catch up on the new stores that have come into the business district since the last time you took a stroll. It's a perfect day for those who may have missed the fun fall festival this past weekend. And don't forget to enjoy Argyle Lake as well.

4. If you're into enjoying fall festivals there are two nearby today: starting at 9 a.m. on Pinelawn Road in Melville. and , which kicks off at 10:00 a.m. on Old Country Rd, Melville.
