Babylon Schools Budget Passes; Bencivenga, Katz Re-Elected

Residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of proposed 2013-14 Babylon School District budget and elected Dominic Bencivenga and Roger Katz to the Board of Education.

The $47.56 million budget was passed by 934 residents, or 73.1 percent. A total of 1,278 residents turned out for the vote and election.

Babylonians also re-elected Dominic Bencivenga and Roger Katz to the Board of Education. Bencivenga received 745 votes and Katz received 919 votes.

Former board member AnneMarie Martino received 671 votes.

"I'n thrilled to be re-elected," said Bencivenga immediately following the announced results. "I look forward to serving the community once again for another three years. I'm very excited to be serving with my colleague Roger Katz again and we've got some very important issues to consider that are facing the school district."

He added: "I hope by working together with the board and the community, we'll get to the right place and do what's best for the children and the community."

Bencivenga also thanked Babylon voters for passing the budget.

"Thank you, once again, for overwhelmingly approving our budget," he said. "This is the second year in a row it was not even close. I think that's indicative of the community understanding that we're doing the best possible in the financial constraints that we have and I'm very grateful for their support."

Superintendent Richard Rozakis, also on hand at the Grade School, said he was excited to have the same board back for another year.

"I'm very happy to have continuity as we're looking forward to another terrific year in our schools," he said.

Six residents also wrote-in candidates, including famous comedian Bob Saget.
