Crimes Nearby: DWI Charge In School Bus Crash

A weekly recap of crimes from across Suffolk County.

The following incidents were reported this past week by Suffolk County Police.

A Commack man was arrested Tuesday after he left the scene of an accident that involved a school bus in Smithtown, Suffolk County Police said.

Robert Slavonik, 44, was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Incident Without Reporting and Driving While Intoxicated, police said.

A school bus was traveling westbound on Route 25A in Smithtown at 9:45 a.m. when it was struck by a Dodge pickup truck that was exiting the Dunkin Donuts parking lot, located at 235 Route 25A, and the driver of the pickup fled the scene, police said.

A witness reported the pickup truck’s plate number to police and police responded to the home of the owner, who was in the driver’s seat of the truck in the driveway when officers arrived.

The bus, which was carrying 26 people, including 23 children, was from the Three Village School District. There were no injuries in the crash.

• Woman Charged In Crash That Killed Man

A Huntington woman was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license following a crash that killed a pedestrian in Cold Spring Harbor, Suffolk County Police said.

Rita Wallace was driving a 2002 Honda Accord eastbound on Main Street when her vehicle struck a pedestrian who was crossing the street at 6:01 p.m. on Thursday, police said. The pedestrian, Jean Carr, 78, of 44 Woodbury Way, Syosset, was transported to Huntington Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Wallace, 40, of 50 Willow Ave., Huntington, was treated at Huntington Hospital for minor injuries.

Wallace was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle 2nd Degree, a misdemeanor, and released on bail.

• Police Seek Man For Centereach Theft

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Sixth Precinct Crime Section officers are seeking the public's help to locate a man who is wanted for questioning regarding a theft at a Centereach store. 

Police said they are looking to speak to Sergii Zhylikov regarding the theft of eight external hard drives from Target, located at 255 Pond Path, on February 10 at approximately 9:20 p.m. The hard drives are valued at more than $725.

Zhylikov’s last known address is 4408 10th Ave. in Brooklyn

• Man Who Stole Credit Card Sought

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Third Squad detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate a man who used a stolen debit card at a bank in Bay Shore in January.

According to police, Healthy Basement Systems, located at 2871Sunrise Highway, Islip Terrace, was burglarized on December 17, 2012, and January 7, 2013.  The only property stolen was a Bank of America Debit Card on January 7.

Police said a light-skinned black or Hispanic man attempted to use the debit card at an ATM at the Bethpage Federal Credit Union, located at 591 E. Main St., Bay Shore on January 7 at 5:53 p.m.

• Police: Smithtown Man Stolen Gasoline

Suffolk County Police arrested a Smithtown man on Monday for stealing gasoline from 16 gas stations throughout Suffolk County.

During the past four months, the suspect pulled up to gas station pumps throughout Suffolk County in a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee and asked the attendant to fill the tank. When the tank was full, the suspect drove off without paying, police said.

After a gasoline theft on February 26 at the Wave Gas Station located at 386 Lake Ave. in St. James, Fourth Precinct Crime Section put out a notification with the description and plate number of the vehicle.

A Third Precinct sector car located the vehicle at the Planet Fitness gym, 894A Sunrise Highway, Bay Shore. Walter Amerbach, 21, was taken into custody and transported to the Fourth Precinct. Amerbach, of Smithtown, was charged with 11 counts of Petit Larceny, police said.
