Village Lights Up Christmas Tree to Ring in the Holidays

Like a scene out of a Christmas story, snow fell as the village merrily joined in the lighting of the tree.

Christmas got an official local start in Babylon Village on Sunday afternoon as the Argyle Park tree was lit up for the first time during the holidays.

Village Mayor Ralph Scordino had the honors again of throwing the switch to power up the hundreds of beautiful lights adorning the large evergreen in the southeast corner of the park between Main Street and the park's parking lot.

The scene was "perfect" as a few attendees told Patch, with chilly air and snow lightly falling as the crowd gathered. A few local teenagers from the West Babylon Choral sang holiday classics while another musician played his guitar.

Scordino, along with the village board, let the group in singing "Jingle Bells" before lighting up the tree.

Santa Claus eventually made his appearance at the park, led by the Babylon Fire Department, and took photographs with all of the children that showed up.

The annual event usually caps off the big holiday weekend in the village, although the signature "Old Fashioned Village Christmas" was postponed by a downpour this past Friday. The event has been rescheduled for this Friday, December 13.
