I’m Not A Martha Stewart Kinda Girl

Martha Stewart wouldn't set foot in my home.

Someone with a very warped sense of humor gifted me with a subscription to Martha Stewart Living.   The laughter this generated with my friends on Facebook is still rippling across the United States.   One of my best girlfriends had her daughter post, “Word of advice from Mommy:  don’t get any ideas.  Although it says  ‘do it yourself’ – it wasn’t meant for you.  Please DON’T try this at home.”

Granted I’ve had a few cooking disasters over the years (okay, maybe more than a few – burnt spaghetti, English muffin pizza flambé, exploding meatloaf and pyrex, and even pork chops that disappeared right out of the broiler).  And in a recent story in the Long Island Press about how I started my business in the midst of my son’s health issues, he is quoted as saying, “Boy Survives Brain Tumor; Killed By Mom’s Cooking” -  http://www.fortune52.com/2011/11/09/lori-ames/.

I’m not a great cook and I don’t really have the patience or drive to become one.  I’m not a terrific housekeeper, which is why I have a cleaning person come in once a week.  I tend to stick with my strengths (and in the interest of full disclosure, I am currently working on the publicity campaign for the leader of the strengths revolution, Marcus Buckingham) because that’s where I can get the most done, feel successful, and make the most money.  My home is lived in and comfortable.  Martha Stewart wouldn’t set foot in it.

I like to watch the Food Network, I love going out to dinner, and yes, I love to eat.  But cooking?  Not so much.  There are a few basics that I can put on the table, so we leave it at that.  As far as decorating, Martha has that gene locked up; it definitely didn’t land with me.

So to whoever arranged for me to receive Martha Stewart Living, thank you.  Laughter really is good for the soul.
