What's Worse: Mosquitoes or Spraying?

After the county planned spraying for our area this week, readers about the use of the pesticide "resmethrin" over Long Island. Suffolk officials decided to give the go ahead to spraying against mosquitoes on the South Shore following of West Nile Virus being found in mosquito pools and birds. One unconfirmed case of the virus is still be invesitgated in the state.

Christian Minucci wrote, "I think the spraying! So many ways of doing it without using the spraying. Release more bats in the areas, Tadpoles in ponds."

Tinamarie Smith Leonovich said the bugs had finally gotten to her: "I have been attacked even with the bug spray."

Angelica Laudiero voiced concern about the chemical being used. "You guys should read the warning label on this chemical... Stop being babies and get bug spray! There are people in other countries with mosquitoes the size of our hands that arent complaining!"

Should the Aurora Shooter Receive the Death Penalty?

We asked readers their opinion on the Movie Theater Shooter, James Holmes, and whether his crimes should make him receive the death penatly. Poll results were split, 50-50, on both sides, although voiced opinions indicated many felt he should have the maximum punishment our country has to offer.

One commenter, Paul, wrote in: "Death is to good for this bum. We should torture him for over a year then let him starve to death."

As I explained, my post was made on behalf of another village resident. However, I did take theRead More time to read the statute and do have an independent viewpoint on this subject. While I do not feel that all dogs require a muzzle at all times, if you have a dog that you know to be a threat to other dogs or humans, you would have a duty to take measures to eliminate that threat before bring that dog into public. If that measure is a muzzle, then that's what must be done. As my post indicated, I believe strict enforcement would be exceedingly difficult and, perhaps, unnecessary (at least with respect to the muzzle requirement). However, a total lack of enforcement is dangerous and unacceptable. I think a little common sense goes a long way and I have confidence that those charged with enforcing the Village code could do so selectively. I understand that selective enforcement may be a concept that many feel uncomfortable with. However, just because the law requires a muzzle, that is hardly a reason to disregard it in its entirety and allow dogs with vicious propensities to roam around unleashed. I will leave it up to Village lawmakers to remove the muzzle requirement (and suggest that they do so) if that is what it would take to make people comfortable with the leash requirement.
