Dishwasher Maintenance Checklist: Make it Last for Years

We all rely on our dishwasher so it takes a lot of wear and tear and can get run down pretty quickly. But, by using some do-it-yourself maintenance tips and having it inspected by a Seaford plumber as needed, you can make sure it works well for years to come.

Use it as Directed

Always use your dishwasher as directed. Make sure you load the dishes correctly, use the right kind of detergent and are inserting it the right way. Never try to use it in a way that is not recommended or run it with items that are not dishwasher safe.

Deep Clean it Regularly

Use a damp rag to wipe down the outside of the dishwasher and then clean the walls, bottom and inside of the door to remove build up and debris. Take out removable items and wash them with soap and water.

Run a "Cleaning Cycle"

You can run a DIY cleaning cycle by pouring one cup of white vinegar into a bowl or cup and putting it on the top rack. Then, run your dishwasher on a hot cycle and let the vinegar soften and remove soap scum and grime and get rid of any smells.

Remove and Prevent Rust

Remove rust with a rust remover that is labeled as safe for dishwashers. If you seem to have a regular rust problem, contact a plumber. You may have a problem with rusty pipes or need to install a water softener or water filter.

These DIY tips will help you keep your dishwasher running smoothly and you can find more information on dishwasher maintenance on the Pat Dolan Plumbing website.
