How to Retile your Shower in 5 Steps

Believe it or not, you can retile your own shower in just a few afternoons and make a major statement in your bathroom. If your tile is looking worn or if you are just ready for a fresh look, creating a custom pattern and redoing your shower is a great way to breathe new life into your bathroom.

Step 1: Remove the Old Tile

Remove the old tile by laying a drop cloth over it and using a small sledgehammer to carefully break it up. You’ll need to use some heavy tape to hold the cloth up against the walls when you remove the tile there. Now, remove the cloth and use a scraper or power scraper to remove the tile and adhesive completely. Be sure to wear gloves and safety goggles while you do this.

Step 2: Plan Your Design

Get creative and use different colors, patterns and shapes to create a custom design for your shower. You can sketch out a pattern on graph paper to make it easier to plan and count how many tiles of each kind you will need.

Step 3: Lay Adhesive

Now, following the manufacturer’s directions, use a trowel to add adhesive. It’s a good idea to start in the center of the floor or the shower and only apply adhesive to a small section so you can work with that without adhesive drying before you can get to it.

Step 4: Install the Tile

Using your sketch as a guide, press each tile into the grout evenly and firmly. You can use a level if you need to to make sure the tiles are straight. Use tile spacers between each tile so that the spaces will be even across your entire shower.

Step 5: Apply Grout

When you are done installing the tile, let the adhesive dry for as long as the manufacturer recommends. Then, use a grout float to apply grout in long, diagonal motions. Before it dries, wipe away excessive grout from the tiles with a wet sponge.

Let the tile dry completely before you use your new, custom shower! This project is one you can easily do yourself and that will make a big difference in your bathroom. You can find more tips for installing tile on the Pat Dolan Plumbing website.
