Update (11:10pm): Power has been restored to West Babylon.
The heat wave might have broken, but the troubles continue in our area – a strong thunderstorm pushed through the area, knocking out power to 235 homes in West Babylon and dumping heavy rains across the Island.
West Babylon currently has over 230 homes in the dark after a storm ripped through the area at around 3:30pm. The 4:20pm update from LIPA's website says power should be restored to the area by 9:00pm tonight.
West Babylon's 235 customers are among the 18,700 Island-wide without power right now. Estimated times Island-wide for power to return range from a few hours to as late as 10:00pm.
More thunderstorms are expected throughout the afternoon as a cold front comes through the area. The front will bring with it less humidity and lower temperatures, which have already nosedived from today's reported high of 94 in Farmingdale to 71 degrees at 4:00pm.
