As Summer Heats Up, Arrests Rise Throughout Precinct

Arrests rise while serious crimes seem to be in a lull in nearby areas.

Arrests rose in the last month throughout the First Precinct in Suffolk County as the temperatures climbed, police told residents at a recent community meeting.

Officers in the precinct arrested 626 people in the month of July, over 100 more than police locked up in March of this year when only 501 people were arrested. Officers have long noted the trend of warmer weather bringing out more crime and more arrests in the area.

Major crimes throughout the precinct, however, seemed to remain anywhere from average to low in most areas.

Babylon Village saw little-to-no criminal arrests in past month with no burglaries or stolen vehicles and only one robbery. Nearby West Babylon, by comparison, saw four commercial and residential burglaries each as well as three robberies.

Lindenhurst had a busy month of July, totaling 33 percent of the precinct's commercial burglaries with seven. The village also saw two residential burglaries, two robberies and one stolen vehicle. North Lindenhurst faired better in July, totaling only two residential break-ins, and a single stolen vehicle and robbery.

Over in the North Babylon-Deer Park area, things were also below average for the summer – Deer Park found itself with three commercial break-ins and four residential burglaries, while North Babylon only had a single commercial burglary. Both areas each had a single vehicle stolen and a single robbery.

The precinct did have some positive news regarding car crashes in the past month – no fatalities. Officers did attend to 579 motor vehicle accidents, however, 15.3 percent of with injuries.

The next meeting will be held at the West Babylon Public Library on September 5 at 7 p.m. All residents are welcome to join.
