Babylon Crime Report: Jan. 6 to Jan. 19

Multiple arrests over the last few weeks in our area, including two sexual assaults.

The following information is taken directly from the Suffolk County Police Department's Media Incidents list regarding arrests and incidents. None of the defendants have been convicted of a crime, but were arrested for the charges as noted.

Arrests

January 8th, 2013

Janis Jipp from West Babylon was arrested in West Babylon for Assault: Recklessly Causing Physical Injury.

January 12th, 2013

Jose Chirno from Hempstead was arrested in West Babylon for Rape in the First Degree: Forcible Compulsion.

January 13th, 2013

Richard Hannah from Lindenhurst was arrested in West Babylon for Operating a Motor Vehicle with a BAC of .08 of 1% – First Offense.

January 16th, 2013

Ludevicko Thermitus from Deer Park was arrested in Babylon Village for Rape in the 1st Degree: Intercourse with a Person Under 11 Years of Age.

Sik Fai Cheung from Brooklyn was arrested in Babylon Village for two counts of Identity Theft in the First Degree.

January 18th, 2013

Richard Riehl from North Babylon was arrested in West Babylon for Burglary in the Second Degree.

January 19th, 2013

David Pagona from Babylon Village was arrested in Babylon Village for Criminal Possesion of a Weapon in the Third Degree: Assault Rifle.

Heather Liebman from Commack was arrested in Babylon Village for Driving While Ability Impaired by Alcohol.

Frankie Gonzalez from Brentwood was arrested in Babylon Village for Driving While Intoxicated – First Offense.

As I explained, my post was made on behalf of another village resident. However, I did take theRead More time to read the statute and do have an independent viewpoint on this subject. While I do not feel that all dogs require a muzzle at all times, if you have a dog that you know to be a threat to other dogs or humans, you would have a duty to take measures to eliminate that threat before bring that dog into public. If that measure is a muzzle, then that's what must be done. As my post indicated, I believe strict enforcement would be exceedingly difficult and, perhaps, unnecessary (at least with respect to the muzzle requirement). However, a total lack of enforcement is dangerous and unacceptable. I think a little common sense goes a long way and I have confidence that those charged with enforcing the Village code could do so selectively. I understand that selective enforcement may be a concept that many feel uncomfortable with. However, just because the law requires a muzzle, that is hardly a reason to disregard it in its entirety and allow dogs with vicious propensities to roam around unleashed. I will leave it up to Village lawmakers to remove the muzzle requirement (and suggest that they do so) if that is what it would take to make people comfortable with the leash requirement.
