Bodies Search Will Close Westbound Ocean Parkway

Police effort Monday will run from Gilgo Beach to Tobay Beach starting at 7 a.m.

Suffolk Police will launch a full-day search for human remains related to the Gilgo Beach serial killer case Monday and are closing the westbound lanes of the Ocean Parkway, beginning at the Captree Bridge and ending at Tobay Beach, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The ongoing search follows the discovery of a fifth set of remains this past Tuesday. The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office reported Thursday that the body found is not 24-year-old Shannon Gilbert, the missing New Jersey Craigslist escort last seen in Oak Beach on May 1, 2010.

Gilbert is one of 58 female missing persons investigations in Suffolk County. Of the 58, 41 are “active” investigations, said police, and 17 are “long-term” investigations.

It was a search related to the Gilbert investigation that led to the discovery of the first set of  remains on December 11, 2010, three miles west of Robert Moses bridge.

Two days later three more sets of remains were found. All were identified in January by police. The four young white females include a North Babylon woman, and all four worked as escorts, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office.

The latest body, discovered by a Suffolk Police marine officer during a search last Tuesday afternoon, was found a mile east of where the  four others were discovered.

Police are asking that motorists find alternate routes and make every effort to avoid this area during the search effort.
