Fallen W. Babylon Police Officer Honored

Peter J. Figoski among those honored at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

A former New York City police officer from West Babylon was among four Long Islanders inducted into the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial earlier this week.

Peter J. Figoski, a New York City police officer from West Babylon, was honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., which was attended by President Barack Obama. Figoski was fatally shot in December 2011 while responding to a robbery in Brooklyn.

Califano of Wantagh was killed in the line of duty as a result of a collision on the Long Island Expessway in early 2011. Capano, formerly of Seaford, was  trying to stop an armed robbery of  in Seaford this past New Year's Eve.

Breitkopf, a Nassau BSO officer from Selden, was was accidentally shot and killed by friendly fire while responding to a in Massapequa Park in March 2011.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is the nation’s monument to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. The monument is ever-changing, as new names of the fallen are added each spring.
