Fire Chiefs Start Town of Babylon Relief Fund

Donations will be used to purchase gift cards for families who must rebuild their homes.

Volunteer firefighters from every department in the Town of Babylon risked their lives to rescue others during Hurricane Sandy. Now, they're putting their efforts together to help residents in Town of Babylon rebuild their pummeled homes.

On Sunday, the Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association created a Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund to help families who have lost everything. By purchasing gift cards to home improvement stores, they will be helping people begin to put their houses back together.

"Obviously a lot of homes were damaged and devastated. Lindenhurst Fire Department collected tons and tons of clothing for people who need it. We figured we could step in and give people gift cards to buy something to cover their roof or food if they need it," Ben Lamberson said.

Residents are asked to donate to the fund by making out a check to the Town of Babylon Chiefs Hurricane Relief Fund" and mail to the Town of Babylon Chiefs Association, PO Box 782 Babylon, NY 11702.

Those looking to request help can contact Lamberson at 631-831-3908 to discuss their needs.

I'm looking for a place to donate large appliances. I have a refrigerator and gas stove in very good condition and would love to see them get in the hands of a person in need. I know many people will have insurance provide them new appliances. But in some cases if someone rents within the area - their things may not be covered, and/or as many of you say insurance takes a long time - so maybe this can bridge the gap.
