Looking Back at the Fires of 2013

Remembering the places claimed by flames and the brave firefighters who stepped up to help.

House fires are nearly unavoidable in any Long Island village for a full year, let along in a tightly packed area such as our own.

In the past year, our local fire departments have battled blazes big and small and risked their lives to save our neighbor's as well as their homes. Today we look back at the hard work these brave men and women have put in as well as what the flames claimed in 2013.

W. Babylon Apartment Fire Claims One Life

A West Babylon apartment building fire roared for nearly two hours, claiming one life, before firefighters were able to contain it on Sunday afternoon.

Newsday reports North Babylon Fire Chief Thomas Jordan said a body was founded in the charred remains of an apartment at 1029 Little East Neck Road in West Babylon, but would not identify who the deceased was to reporters.

Early Morning Fire Claims Babylon Village Home

A fire gutted a Babylon Village home on Kittiwake Lane early Thursday morning, reducing much of it to the frame and smoldering remains.

The Babylon Fire Department responded to the call at about 3:50 a.m. on Thursday, finding 30 Kittiwake Lane engulfed in flames. Reports show the fire was under control by about 6:10 a.m., with much of the home collapsed or ruined.

Babylon FD Knocks Down Robert Street Fire

The Babylon Fire Department quickly responded to a house fire at 44 Robert Street on Sunday afternoon, knocking down the fire after it damaged the southern portion of the home.

A dispatch went out at around 12:05 p.m. after flames and heavy black smoke was reported from the single-story ranch at 44 Robert Street. The Babylon Fire Department responded to the scene, bringing the fire under control by 12:30 p.m. and continued to work on the scene, knocking the remaining bits down.

Babylon, W. Babylon FDs Assist In Battling House Fire

Fire fighters from Babylon and West Babylon were on scene of a Wednesday morning fire that destroyed a North Babylon home.

The North Babylon Fire Department arrived at the home located at the corner of Pacific Street and Phelps Lane near North Babylon High School just after 9 a.m. The NBFD was assisted by several fire departments including West Islip, Deer Park, Babylon and West Babylon. 

Fire Rips Through West Babylon Home

A West Babylon family is reportedly safe after a fire ripped through their home right before noon on Sunday.

A fire ripped through a home at 50 Beaver Lane in West Babylon earlier Sunday, reportedly starting just before 12 p.m., causing heavy damage to the south side of the home.
