Man Arrested on Public Lewdness Charges

Selden resident accused of several Suffolk incidents.

Suffolk police arrested a registered sex offender Saturday on multiple charges of public lewdness in Suffolk County.

Police gave this account:

A woman saw a man masturbating Friday at the Barnes & Noble store in East Northport. He fled the store after she screamed.

Second Squad detectives determined that the man was Angel Laporte, 54, of 15 Bear St., Selden. Laporte is a registered sex offender in Connecticut.

Sixth Precinct Crime Section Officers Frank Cutinella and Stephen Kenny arrested Laporte in front of his home at approximately 6:50 p.m. Saturday night.

Further investigation Laporte committed public acts of lewdness at the Deer Park Public Library on Jan. 5 and at the Commack Public Library and the West Babylon Public Library on May 7, 2012. 

Laporte is also wanted by the New Milford Police Department in Connecticut, for three warrants for failing to register as a sex offender. The New Milford Police Department has been notified of his arrest.

The Special Victims Unit is also investigating.

Laporte was charged with four counts of public lewdness. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Sunday. He will be held overnight at the 2nd Precinct.
