Medical Examiner: Missing NJ Woman Not One of the Gilgo Bodies

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner said late today that none of the four female bodies discovered in Gilgo Beach is that of a missing 24-year-old New Jersey woman.

None of the four bodies discovered this week on Gilgo Beach are that of Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old New Jersey woman reported missing in May, according to Suffolk County Police.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office made the determination through analysis of forensic evidence. Suffolk Police said they have not identified any suspects in the case.

The investigation into the disappearance of Gilbert is still ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS or the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392. All calls will be kept confidential.

On Thursday police seized a white SUV from an Oak Beach residence in connection with the discovery of the four human skeletal remains and bodies along Ocean Parkway in Gilgo Beach.

There is no further information on the vehicle owner or location of residence at this point, according to police. A resident has told Patch that police cars were seen at a home in the Oak Beach area yesterday. Police said today they have not identified any suspects in the case.

Police say the four bodies found on Gilgo Beach are all female and no official identifications had yet been made as of late Wednesday night.

Earlier in the day Wednesday police said the FBI is offering support and services as they continue their investigation of four bodies found along Ocean Parkway in Gilgo Beach earlier this week.

"I held a meeting between members of my staff and the FBI's New York office today concerning the discovery of four bodies in Gilgo Beach during the past several days. The FBI has offered all available resources in support of our investigation," said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer in a statement released Wednesday afternoon.

The first skeletal remains of a body was found Saturday during a canine unit search for Gilbert, a Craigslist prostitute who was last seen after being driven by a man to meet a client on in Oak Beach back in May. An expanded search led to discovery of three more on Monday.

Police say the bodies were likely disposed of by the same person but would not confirm it is the work of a serial killer. Yet they aren't dismissing that possibility either.

In a press conference Tuesday Dormer said a potential serial killer scenario is an avenue of investigation.

"I'm not going to say that but it is something we're looking at," Dormer said during a press conference at the investigation site on Ocean Parkway.  He noted that it's "not a coincidence" that four bodies ended up in the same area.

The remains were found about 500 feet apart. Some remains were left at the site as recently as a month ago while others may have been there as long as a year and a half, say police.
