Montauk Highway Closed in Town of Babylon

NY-27A is cut off in both directions due to flooding as storm kicks up Monday afternoon.

Montauk Highway in the Town of Babylon is now closed.

The New York Department of Transportation shut down the road in both directions from Amityville to Babylon Village at Monday afternoon due to flooding, as Hurricane Sandy blows through Long Island. The Department of Transportation expects the highway to reopen at noon Tuesday.

Robert Moses Causeway south of Montauk Highway is also closed due to flooding.

As winds and rain from Hurricane Sandy begin to lash the south shore of Long Island, residents living along the water are seeing water levels rise with several streets already covered and impassable.

A number of homes south of Montauk Highway within the Town of Babylon have already flooded. Firefighters have been called to multiple residencies along the water for families in need of rescue.

Residents needing to evacuate can visit the American Red Cross shelter at Robert Frost Middle School in Deer Park (450 Half Hollow Road) or the Babylon Town Hall Annex (281 Phelps Lane, North Babylon), which has been declared a place of safe haven during the storm.

For families with pets, the Brentwood Recreation Center (99 Third Avenue, Brentwood 11717) is a designated pet-friendly shelter.
