News Update: Gilgo Beach Bodies May be Work of Serial Killer

Suffolk Police say the skeletal remains of four bodies found along Ocean Parkway could be the work of a serial killer who dumped the bodies after killing them elsewhere.

Suffolk County Police say four bodies discovered at Gilgo Beach were likely dumped by  the same person but  would not confirm the remains are the work of a serial killer. Yet  they aren't dismissing the probability either.

A search for a missing female prostitute from New Jersey led to the discovery Saturday of skeletal remains  west of Robert Moses Bridge.

According to police,  Shannon Gilbert, 24, was a Craigslist prostitute who was last seen after being driven by a man  to meet a client on Fire Island in May, and then was declared a missing person. None of the  remains found have been officially identified by the police or the medical  examiner's office.

The remains of three additional bodies were discovered late Monday. The bodies were found about 500 feet apart and some remains were left at the site as recently as a month ago while others may have been there as long as a year and a half, say police.

In a press conference today Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said a potential serial killer scenario is  an avenue of investigation.

"I'm not going to say that but it is something we're looking at," Dormer said during a press conference at the investigation site on Ocean Parkway.  He noted that it's "not a coincidence"  that four bodies ended up in the same area.

The remains are undergoing DNA and forensics analysis to determine sex and identification and one is likely another female.
