Update: Pedestrian Killed in Hit-And-Run on Sunrise Highway

Accident occurred in West Babylon around 1:40 a.m. Sunday, police say.

Update (11:30 a.m.):

The Suffolk County Police Department have released the name of the victim in the early Sunday morning hit-and-run.

Police said Jennifer Wheeler, 30, of North Lindenhurst, was found lying in the left lane of westbound Sunrise Highway near Jerome Avenue at about 1:45 a.m. this morning.

A passing driver had seen a woman leaning against the center median and turned around to check on her well-being when, at that point according to police, the driver and other motorists found Wheeler lying the left lane dead.

Wheeler was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Police said they believe Wheeler was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. There are currently no known eyewitnesses to the incident and no information on the type of vehicle that struck Wheeler.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

Original Story (9:45 a.m.):

Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash in West Babylon early Sunday morning.

An unidentified female pedestrian was struck by a vehicle travelling westbound on Sunrise Highway, east of Little East Neck Road, around 1:40 a.m. police said.

The driver of the vehicle did not stop, police said.
