Police Find Lip Gloss in Oak Beach During Gilbert Search Today

Suffolk police discover another item that may be linked to the missing Shannan Gilbert.

Suffolk Police found lipgloss today in Oak Beach marshland, the fifth day of searching this week for Shannan Gilbert, the missing New Jersey woman, and plan to resume searching the marshland come Monday.

The lip gloss, according to police, was found a few feet from where a pocketbook was found on Tuesday. The pocketbook is Gilbert's, according to police. On Wednesday police stated they found jeans, shoes and a cell phone that likely belong to Gilbert. While published reports state the family identified those items as Gilbert's the police have not yet confirmed that information.

The search area, near the Robert Moses Causeway along Ocean Parkway, is now guarded by police to prevent any authoritzed persons from entering the search area.

It's been a busy week for Suffolk law enforcement officers who began re-searching the beach area for the 24-year-old New Jersey woman last seen fleeing Oak Beach after an escort appointment on May 1, 2010. Police have combed the beach area several times over the past year but resumed searching this past Monday given favorable weather and tide conditions.

It was a search for Gilbert on December 10, 2010 that led to the discovery of a set of human remains that are now part of a serial killer investigation related to 10 victims. That investigation continues and police state they believe the two cases are not related.

The serial killer case, which police believe is the work of one Long Island male, involves eight women, one male and one toddler whose remains were found between January, 2011 and April, 2011.

This week Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer stated police believe Gilbert ran into the marsh area and likely drowned and that her body is somewhere in the quick-sand like bay bottom.
