Police Investigating West Babylon Drive-By Shooting

Shooting left one Wheatley Heights man injured by shrapnel pieces.

The Suffolk County Police Department First Squad detectives are investigating a shooting incident that occurred in West Babylon this afternoon.

Stephon Washington, 22, of Wheatley Heights, was with three other people outside of a home on Essex Street in West Babylon around noon when a car drove by and an occupant of the car fired shots toward the individuals, according to a representative from the precinct.

Washington, along with his companions, dropped to the ground when the shots were fired, but was hit with a piece of shrapnel from the bullets and suffered a cut on his leg.

Washington was transported by his friends to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. No other information concerning his condition was available at this time.

A few weeks ago, a West Babylon man was shot outside of a party and later died only a short distance away on Centerwood Street. There was no word on whether the two shootings are at all connected.
