Police Looking for Hit-and-Run Driver Who Smashed PD Car

Driver allegedly smashed open door on police cruiser before fleeing the scene.

Suffolk County Police are on the lookout for a driver who smashed a police cruiser on early Sunday morning before fleeing the scene.

Police told Newsday a police cruiser was parked on westbound Main Street in Babylon Village near Melbury Road on early Sunday morning addressing a different motor vehicle crash when a vehicle slammed into the parked car, bending the driver's side door backwards.

The driver then took off from the scene as quickly as it hit the parked cruiser.

The car used in the crime was described by officers as possibly a gold Nissan Maxima.

The collision, which reportedly occurred at around 1:20 a.m. on Sunday, came only minutes after another collision on the same roadway, which the officer was investigating.

The parked cruiser had its flashing lights on with the driver's side door open, according to a report. The officer was not injured in the crash.

Anyone who might have witnessed the crash or has information on the accident is asked to call the First Squad at (631) 854-8152 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
