Police Rescue Kite Surfer Off Cedar Beach

High winds leave man stranded in marshes.

A kite surfer stranded in marshland off Cedar Beach was rescued late Thursday afternoon by Suffolk County Marine Bureau officers and Nassau County police.

Timothy Weekley, 36, was with a group surfing from Tobay Beach to Oak Island when the New York City resident got separated from the group.

After two hours of waiting for him to appear at Oak Island, the friends called police for help.

Suffolk Marine Bureau police boats and helicopter teams from both counties began searching, and Weekley was found at 5:40 p.m. in the marsh area.

Police said Weekley attempted to surf back into the channel but decided to stay put due to high winds and strong waves.

A Marine Bureau patrol boat pulled him from the water, and he was treated at Cedar Beach.
