UPDATE: Police Resuming Body Search Near Captree Island

New York State and Suffolk Police plan to resume searching beach area along Robert Moses Causeway Tuesday morning.

Aerial photographs taken by the FBI more than a month ago is prompting New York State Police to resume searching for human remains in the Captree Island area near Robert Moses Causeway Tuesday morning.

The search is part of the continuing investigation into the murders of four young women whose remains were discovered in December, 2010, and a total of eight sets of remains uncovered during searches in the past six months. The four women's deaths have been called the work of a serial killer by police.

Suffolk County Police will participate in tomorrow's search, with Homicide Task Force members involved as well as a canine unit.

It was a Suffolk County Police canine unit search on December 11, 2010, tied to the still missing Shannon Gilbert, that uncovered the remains of the first young woman, Megan Waterman, a 22-year-old Maine woman reported missing a year this month from Hauppauge. Gilbert was last seen May 1, 2010 leaving the community of Oak Beach.

Police conducted aerial searches in mid April using FBI planes and high-definition photography equipment. The aerial view allowed law enforcement to survey beach areas which proved tough to canvass due to thick foliage.
