Search Continues for More Bodies in Gilgo Beach

Police say they have not identified the four female bodies and that state police have completed their canine search efforts in Suffolk and Nassau. There are no suspects or persons of interest at this point.

Suffolk County police are continuing their search east of Oak Beach in the Gilgo body investigation and have no suspects or persons of interest at present.

One set of animal bones were examined by the medical examiner late yesterday and another set of bones found today are also very likely animal remains, said police at a briefing held mid afternoon at the former OBI bar parking lot on Ocean Parkway.

Police said that a West Islip man whose SUV was seized earlier this week is not a suspect or person of interest.

They also downplayed a serial killer scenario, saying there are many possible reasons the bodies were dumped at the location.

Police are examining missing persons cases in both counties, said Suffolk County Police Deputy Inspector William Neubauer who led the briefing along with Suffolk County Police Deputy Chief John Meehan.

The search for more bodies will continue today and possibly tomorrow, though state police canine units have completed their search of beach area in Oak Beach and in Nassau County.

"We have conducted an extensive search and we still have Suffolk canine units actively searching the area to the east of Oak beach," said Neubauer. "We're going to make a determination later in the day whether to return tomorrow."

"Before we leave here we want to make sure that no stone is left uncovered and that's what we are doing right now," he added.

Restating that no identifications have been made, Neubauer said the current speculation about the bodies has "run amuck."

"We have alot of  tips to follow up on and it's going to be alot of work for us," said Neubauer.

"There are so many question marks and we are shifting through dozens of leads," he said. "We have more questions than answers unfortunately."
