Tips For Preventing Fires in the Winter Months

Winter months can be fraught with fire dangers. Patch shares some good safety tips provided by the Babylon Fire Department's website.

The Babylon Fire Department is offering up several good safety and fire prevention tips on its website.

So to help residents avoid potential disaster and be safe this season, Patch wanted to share the advice.

Tip 1. Have your oil burner serviced. This can prevent those nasty puff-backs and other problems. It will also help make your burner work more efficiently.

Tip 2. Get the chimney cleaned. A buildup of soot and ash inside a chimney can lead to a fire situation. It’s also never a good idea to use gasoline in a fireplace or to burn sawdust.

Tip 3.  If you use space heaters, you need to remember that they can’t be sitting against other objects and should be at least three feet away from any object. You should always turn off heaters if you’re not home or when you go to bed. Don’t use them to dry laundry or in rooms where they may come in contact with water, such as the bathroom or laundry room.

Tip 4. It may seem commons sense, but ovens and stoves should not be used to heat up the kitchen or room in a house.

Tip 5. Village code prohibits open burning of materials; even open wood stoves like chimneas. Residents should never burn leaves, yard debris or garbage items.

The fire department also asks village residents to help keep fire hydrants clear during the snowy months to help keep them accessible.
