Two-Car Accident Shuts Down Part of Route 109

A two-car accident closed Route 109 between Wellwood Avenue and Straight Path on Saturday night.

A two-car collision caused a part of Route 109 to be shut down on the West Babylon/North Lindenhurst border on Saturday around 11 p.m.

According to a few eyewitnesses at the scene, a maroon Saturn sedan jumped the median at Third Avenue after traveling in the South-/Eastbound lanes across the roadway and collided with a tan vehicle heading the opposite direction.

The tan vehicle appeared to hit the Saturn on the passenger's side, flipping it over and destroying much of the tan car's front, they said.

The West Babylon Fire Department and Suffolk County Police Department responded to the accident, and were on scene until after 11:45 p.m., clearing up the July 28 accident.

At least two people were taken away from the scene in ambulances.

The roadway was shut down from Wellwood Avenue to Straight Path.

No immediate official word has been given on the cause of the crash or the status of the drivers.
