W. Babylon Alum Linked to Kansas City Murder-Suicide

Kansas City Chiefs' Jovan Belcher allegedly committed suicide in front of team officials after murdering girlfriend.

Update (2:50 p.m.): Kansas City Cheifs CEO Clark Hunt released the following statement via the team's website:

"The entire Chiefs family is deeply saddened by today's events, and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy. We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted.
We will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities and work to ensure that the appropriate counseling resources are available to all members of the organization.”

Multiple reports have identified West Babylon High School alum Jovan Belcher as the Kansas City Chiefs player involved in a murder-suicide earlier this morning.

Kansas City police supervisor Andrea Khan did not identify the player involved, but noted in a press conference that two shootings occurred – the first in a Kansas City, Mo. neighborhood and the other at Arrowhead Stadium, the Chiefs' home. The second shooting reportedly occurred at 8 a.m. CST.

Kansas City Police Captain David Lindaman told The Kansas City Star that Chiefs lineback Jovan Belcher shot his girlfriend after an argument this morning. An unnamed team source also told CBSSports.com that Belcher was involved in the shootings. Belcher, a four-year NFL veteran and West Babylon native, was 25 years old.

The team has not officially identified the player involved at this time.

Belcher reportedly committed suicide at the stadium in front of two Chiefs officials. Jason LaCanfora of CBSSports.com was told the two officials were head coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Kansas City Chiefs said in a statement. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation." Arrowhead Stadium continues to remain on lockdown.

Belcher and his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, 22, had a child earlier this year, according to Deadspin.

Belcher was a standout player during his time at West Babylon Senior High School, leading the team to a perfect season in his senior year. He played linebacker, offensive tackle, nose guard and fullback while on the varsity team. He graduated from the high school in 2005.

Belcher also attended the University of Maine, where he graduated in 2009 with a degree in Child Development, according to the Chiefs' media guide.
