W. Babylon Man Charged With DWI in Cop Car Accident

A Suffolk police officer was injured in a crash Tuesday night in West Babylon.

A Suffolk County police officer was injured Tuesday night in a car crash that led the arrest of a West Babylon resident who was charged with driving while intoxicated, according to police.

James D. Toner, 55, was driving a 2008 Mercedes Benz when he crashed his car into a vehicle being driven by Suffolk Police Crime Scene Officer Tom Berry at 10 p.m., according to police.

The accident took place at West Main Street and Bergen Avenue and Berry was leaving the scene of a nearby investigation, according to police.

Berry suffered a sprained back and neck, and contusions to his knees from the impact to the dashboard. He was taken for treatment to Good Samaritan Hospital and was released, according to police.

Police state Toner was arrested and charged for DWI.

The accident happened just minutes after a West Babylon man was struck by a car in West Babylon in a separate incident.
