West Babylon Man Dead After Early Sunday Morning Shooting

A West Babylon man was killed only a few blocks from his home early Sunday morning.

A West Babylon man is dead following an early Sunday morning shooting on St. John Place in the hamlet.

The Suffolk County Police Department are investigating the death of Rashad Capers, 18, of West Babylon, early Sunday morning. Police were called to 568 Centerwood Street at around 1:30 a.m. after multiple 911 callers reported hearing gunshots and finding a man lying in the street.

Upon officers' arrival, they found Capers lying in the roadway near 568 Centerwood Street. According to police, Capers had been shot a short distance away at 25 St. John Place.

Capers, who lived only a few blocks away from where he was shot, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where he later died from his injuries.

The Associated Press reports Capers had been attending a party for a teenager.

Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
