West Babylon Man Gets 50 Years for Child Rape

Suffolk County District Attorney says sentencing takes a major child predator off the streets.

A 28-year-old West Babylon man was sentenced today to 50 years-to-life in prison following conviction of predatory sexual assault against a child, sexual abuse and other crimes.

Juan T. Ramirez Jr., raped and sexually abused a female younger than eleven years old in May, 2010, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney office.

“It has been said the only way to protect children from these sex offenders is to incarcerate them for the rest of their lives.  We have taken a predator off the streets and in turn protected our children,” said District Attorney Thomas Spota.

Ramirez was found guilty of two counts of predatory sexual assault against a child, first degree sexual abuse and criminal sexual act in the first degree following a three-week trial in May.

“Through the efforts of the Suffolk County police detectives in the computer crimes and special victims sections we were able to recover images of the victim from the media card in the defendant’s cell phone even though he had deleted them,” Spota said in a media release on the case. That evidence, as well as DNA and medical evidence presented at trial, were responsible for the verdict, noted Spota.

The sentencing was handed down by Suffolk Court Judge Barbara Kahn. Assistant District Attorneys Adina Weidenbaum and Laurie Moroff of the Suffolk County District Attorney Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Bureau prosecuted the case.
