Babylon FD Awarded $55k Grant for New Radios

Senators Schumer and Gillibrand help secure major grant to upgrade fire department's technology.

The Babylon Fire Department will be responding to rescue calls with more clarity and better reception after receiving a $55,066 grant to replace their outdated communications equipment through FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The large grant will reportedly go towards upgrading the department's mobile and portable radio system, which was called "antiquated." The old radio system had weak signal strength near coastal areas and did not operate well with other local fire departments' radio systems, posing a potential threat to the lives of firefighters and other residents.

"We're grateful to be awarded this grant to enhance firefighter and public safety," said Babylon Village Fire Chief Paul Twardy.  "We're a small department, but we're essential the community, and we rely on these funds to update our equipment to adhere to State and federal mandates, and to ensure the safety of residents as well as those who visit our thriving commercial center and recreational areas."

The department plans to install the new mobile radios in all 14 of their firefighting vehicles as well as replace portable two-way radios for department members.

The funds for the department's upgrade were received through the FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program and secured by local senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.

“With these funds, Babylon Village firefighters will have the proper equipment to safely respond to emergencies in the community,” said Schumer. “This investment will help ensure that our local heroes have the equipment that will help them work as efficiently and effectively as possible to protect Babylon Village residents.”

“These are vital investments for the Babylon Village Fire Department,” said Gillibrand. “Babylon fire fighters were on the front lines during Superstorm Sandy, providing critical emergency assistance. This federal funding will help update their equipment so our first responders can respond to emergencies more efficiently and effectively, and help save more lives.”
