Bridge Renamed for Fallen West Babylon NYPD Officer

Officer Peter Figoski was honored by a bridge renamed in his memory.

A ceremony was held on November 30 on Sunrise Highway to dedicate the Route 109 overpass to the memory of fallen New York City Police Officer Peter Figoski, a West Babylon father of four.

The newly renamed "NYPD Officer Peter Figoski Memorial Bridge" links the two halves of West Babylon divided by Sunrise Highway, leading to the area nearest to the Suffolk County Police Department First Precinct.

"Officer Figoski gave his life protecting our city and renaming this bridge is an important and deserved tribute,” said Senator Phil Boyle at the ceremony. “For many years to come, every time people pass by this bridge they will be reminded of Peter’s bravery and sacrifice."

NYPD Det. Figoski was killed on December 12, 2011 during a robbery in Cypress Hills. He was fatally shot by one of the robbers as he blocked the exit to the area the suspects were cornered in. Funeral services for the fallen officer brought thousands to Babylon Village, where his four daughters attended school.

A Brooklyn man, Lamont Pride, was found guilty earlier this year in the death of Figoski. He was sentenced to 45 years-to-life in prison for the crime.

He was promoted, posthumously, to detective and awarded the department's Medal of Honor.

The renaming bill passed through the state senate in November without opposition, with 62 "aye" votes and one vote excused.

In addition to the bridge, the street where Figoski and his daughters lived was also renamed in his honor in August.
