Bridge To Be Renamed for NYPD Officer Figoski on Nov. 30

Overpass located on Route 109 at Sunrise Highway will bear Figoski's name.

The Route 109 Overpass at Sunrise Highway will be renamed for a West Babylon NYPD officer killed in the line of duty later this month, according to elected officials.

The overpass, which spans Sunrise Highway, will be renamed the "New York Police Department Officer Peter Figoski Memorial Bridge," according to a bill passed by the New York State Senate last month.

The renaming ceremony will be held on November 30 at 10:30 a.m., State Senator Phil Boyle (R–Bay Shore) said in a statement.

“Officer Figoski gave his life protecting our city and renaming this bridge is an important and deserved tribute,” said Boyle. “For many years to come, every time people pass by this bridge they will be reminded of Peter’s bravery and sacrifice.”

Signage will be displayed on the overpass and on Route 109 noting the new name for the bridge.

NYPD Det. Figoski was killed on December 12, 2011 during a robbery in Cypress Hills. He was fatally shot by one of the robbers as he blocked the exit to the area the suspects were cornered in.

He was promoted, posthumously, to detective and awarded the department's Medal of Honor.

The renaming bill passed through the senate without opposition, with 62 "aye" votes and one vote excused.
