Conklin Award To Be Presented to Babylon Fire Department

Annual volunteerism award will be given to department for going above and beyond during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

The Village of Babylon will present the annual Nathaniel Conklin House Volunteerism Award to the Babylon Fire Department in a ceremony later this year.

Village trustee Debbie Basile announced the news during the village board meeting on July 9, noting the Babylon Fire Department had gone above and beyond the call of duty during Hurricane Sandy in October.

"This year, the organization being given the award will be the Babylon Fire Department," Basile said. "They did a wonderful job during Sandy, and a wonderful job every day of the year."

The award is usually given to an individual in the neighborhood, but the committee felt the entire fire department was deserving in recognition of their hard work during and after the storm.

The fire department responded to over 60 calls during the middle of the hurricane, including four house fires and helping evacuate people from their homes when flood waters rose too high.

The department will be given the award in a ceremony in September later this year.
